Multifuel Stoves - Efficiency, Versatility and Flexibility
If you're looking for alternative fuels to heat your home, choose a multifuel stove and you'll have a wide range of choices. Installing a multi fuel stove allows you to use a variety of fuels and frees your from dependence on gas and electricity.
At one time, your only choice for a fuel for your stove was wood. Then along came electricity and natural and LP gas which offered cleanliness and convenience. But as the cost of fossil fuels have risen and people have become more eco-conscious, other fuels have become popular.
Today, you can choose wood pellets, corn, bio-diesel and other alternative fuel sources to heat your home, cook your food and even produce hot water. Owning a multifuel stove allows you to take advantage of all these fuels types. Also known as solid fuel stoves or coal stoves, they are usually made from steel or cast iron and each have separate considerations.
The conductive properties of these metals are important. For example, steel heats and cools down quickly; cast iron, in contrast, takes longer to heat up but retains that heat long after the fire is out. Also, you need more space around a cast iron stove to allow for the circulation of air. Without this, it could crack.
In recent years, a series of developments and modifications have made multi fuel stoves much more efficient and easier to use and maintain. For example most now feature a grate that allows air to flow underneath. The ash drops down and collects in a pan for convenient cleaning. Some have external riddling grates to shake the ash out into the ash pan, others have basic riddling, while yet others don't riddle at all. Some models feature a tertiary air supply. This works to makes the stove far more efficient by burning off any excessive gasses. The result is less emission though the chimney.
Another improvement is the use of an airwash which keeps the glass on the door clean. It works by drawing air into the stove and passing it across the glass to prevent blacking by smoke. It usually works through a top slider or spinner.
When choosing which fuel to use, you should be aware that each has its own characteristics. Wood is environmentally friendly as it's carbon neutral. This means it only gives off as much carbon as the wood has taken in while the tree grew. Seasoning has an important effect on wood. Seasoned wood will not emit smoke but you need to season wood for over two years and longer for hardwoods.
Smokeless coal produces a higher and more even temperature via its slower burn rate making it perfect for overnight burning.
Other fuel options for multifuel stoves include corn pellets, hulled wheat, cherry pits, waste paper pellets, and many other alternative fuels.
After lighting, small fires will generally burn for 2 - 4 hours depending on the type of wood and how well it is seasoned. Using smokeless fuel allows burning from 6 - 12 hours depending on the size and quality of the fuel.
You can get multifuel stoves in a broad range of sizes, shapes and finishes. Some can fit into your fireplace, other models can be used for cooking, as well.
Ease of installation depends on whether or not your home has a chimney. If you have one, fitting your stove is straightforward. If your home doesn't have a chimney, a prefabricated chimney will do in most cases and is much cheaper than building a chimney. This is usually in the form of a twin wall insulated flue.
Some multifuel stoves are able to power central heating systems or domestic hot water boilers. They can be installed along with the heating system linked into an existing system depending on your circumstances.
If you decide to replace your open fire with a multi fuel stove you'll economize in fuel use, too. Because multifuel stoves are sealed and they don't wastefully release heat up the chimney, they burn less around three times less fuel than open fires.
If you've decided a multifuel stoves is for you, the best place to see what's available is to visit the web site of an online dealer and check the details there. You can browse photographs and get information on sizes and prices. You can place your order at the web sites and your stove will be delivered to your home.

What is the best multi fuel stove to be connected to a back boiler?
I am looking to buy a multi fuel stove to also heat radiators, I was initially looking at a Stanley Erin, but are there more cost effective brands out there? Ha anyone any experience with these?
How do you intend to connect the stove to the back boiler? if you mean the old back boiler in the fireplace, these are too small to give hot water and heat radiators. If you mean a gas back boiler, you will have great difficulty in connecting to it as they are only designed for a gas fire to be connected to.
