Lions have a group under Craig Lambert which monitors players 24/7. Local TV showed a doco a couple of years ago which showed the wide scope of the Player Welfare programme, from cooking & housekeeping to personal finances, juggling club promo duties / training / media / interests / social life, & personal issues. Some parts are individual, some as interest groups & others as a team. And its not just for new recruits / rookies. Aker bucked the system & paid the price.
In Fev's case, how far did player welfare go at Carlton ?

firstly.
carlton has had the buddy system in place at that club. which is something that happened in the years when david parkin was there. as they recruited a lot of players from interstate.
but now with the draft system in place and a lot more younger players at the club. that has not changed. as your could see by what happened to fev at the brownlow night. and the recent antics that have been highlighted in the press with a couple of other players.that this system is starting to fail them badly.
the system that they have in place at brisbane.is the brain child of leigh mathews.
who in his wisdom decided that players coming from interstate.
or getting drafted at a young age. to a very rugby league dominated state,full of good weather and lots of loose woman. would need to have this kind of 24/7 support to keep their minds on the job at hand. instead of doing the things that would see them in the media spotlight for the wrong reasons.
its a great system and it works.
these players spend so much time promoting the game up here that they don't have time for anything else.
its going to be great for fev.
as he is a superstar of the game and the kids up here are going to idolise him when they get to meet him.
in turn it will boost his self esteam no end.
which is something that he really needs to get that elusive 100 that he has always wanted.
