Odor problem from sleeping bag?
It’s worse in the winter, when I open out another bag and use it over the one I’m sleeping in. I’m using a cotton-covered bag with synthetic fill from Coleman. If I do not launder these bags once weekly, it gets worse.
Do down-filled bags have less of an odor problem? I think the bags I’m using maybe do not “breathe” enough.
In my experience, not extreme, not limited, the problem lie mainly in your outer cover. The cotton is probably trapping a lot of the odor. All fills will trap it, but a good, impermeable shell is easily wiped out in the morning. I've gone for forty days in the same bag while stationed in Alaska. Given, I was in a ten man tent with thirteen other stinky guys and may not have noticed a smell in my bag over a smell in my pits, but I do definitely recall more of an odor on the fleece throw I used inside my bag then I did in my bag.
I bought a Marmot Atom a few years ago, when hiking and camping were a large part of my life and have never looked back. It was expensive at the time, but I'm sure you can find one on ebay now for a decent price, or a good knockoff by this point. The first link at the bottom will let you see the specifics. It's not an extreme weather bag, but I've used it well below 35 and been comfortable with just a fleece throw inside. It doesn't have an odor problem per say, but I do (did rather) air it out pretty regularly by flipping it inside out.
Now, if you need extreme weather, and military proficiency there is a three piece system used by the US Army that is unbelievable for tent, starry sky, or house use. It's got the same type of exterior as my Marmot (plus an outer Gortex shell), and has no noticeable odor trapping problems if you use good hygiene skills before sleeping. And, again, a baby wipe will clean the interior in the morning and really extend it's use between washes. And I know for a fact that these can easily be found in any GI shop, or Ranger Joe's online for a lot less than their list price.
So, though these two options are a bit pricey, the idea is simple. Stay away from cloth linings (use a fleece throw inside for that smooth touch), and stick to synthetic, wipeable interiors. I think that will help immeasurably with your bag's odor problems.
