Backpacking Essentials You Must Take on Every Trip
By: Will McGee
There are specific backpacking essentials you should take if you are intending to take a trip of any duration. Despite the fact that there are many good state-of-the-art gadgets out there you can use, there are certain standard things that you should take with you. For instance, if you bring a battery powered GPS and the batteries go dead, you may be in trouble without a map. This concept leads me into the backpacking essentials which you need to take on your trip:
- Map-You should pick a map that is suitable for backpacking or hiking. It needs to contain proper information about the routes and the place of your trip.
- Compass-While having a map is important, the compass is an essential friend to the map. These two backpacking essentials go hand in hand. Trails can start to look identical out in the wilderness, so it is imperative you have a sense of direction. You should pick a compass that is sturdy and will stand up to elements such as water.
- Flashlight-Having adequate lighting assures that you see what is up ahead of you. Having adequate lighting can protect against falls or accidents; things which could put a end on your trip.
- Spare food and clothing-There are many conditions that can happen while you are out on the path, so you will want to take extra food and clothing. You should always take precautions for the unforeseen. It's wiser to be safe than sorry when planning your backpacking essentials.
- Knife-A knife is one thing that you will discover several jobs for while you are in the wilderness. If you can afford it, a knife such as Swiss Army knife is a good asset since you can do quite a few things with it. At minimum, you will need a razor-sharp knife that you can use to cut fabric and cord.
- Matches-The matches you bring should be waterproof. As with everything else, matches are must have backpacking essentials. If you do not buy waterproof matches, make sure you keep them in something that is waterproof.
- Water or water treatment-You must keep a healthy body and in tip top shape while you are on the trail, and being energized is one of the best ways. If you are not going to keep drinking water with you, then you should carry essential products, such as iodine tablets, to treat the drinking water.
- First Aid Kit-I believe this to be one of the most important backpacking essentials. You never know what you may run across in the wilderness. Having a first aid kit is vital even for well traveled places or parts you have been to before. You should make sure that the kit is stocked with a assortment of materials and be able to make use of all of the things properly.
